The short answer
This is one of the most common questions we get at Peak Oxygen, and honestly, it’s a fair one. A lot of people assume home oxygen is going to be expensive, but in Alberta, for most people who qualify, it’s fully funded. Home oxygen is covered through Alberta Aids to Daily Living (AADL) and Alberta Blue Cross. If you have a valid Alberta health care number and meet the funding criteria, there is usually no cost to you.
How funding works
In most cases, funding starts with an arterial blood gas (ABG) test. This is not the same as the regular bloodwork you get done at a community lab. An ABG is a specific test that checks the oxygen level in your blood, and it’s usually taken from an artery in your wrist, not from a vein in your arm. So even if someone has had bloodwork done recently, it doesn’t always mean they’ve had the test needed for oxygen funding.
What numbers qualify
One of the key numbers on that test is your PaO2, which is the amount of oxygen dissolved in your blood. If your PaO2 is between 56 and 59, you may qualify depending on the rest of your clinical picture. If your PaO2 is 55 or below, you do qualify.
What’s covered
If you qualify, the funding usually covers everything you need to get started and stay set up properly. That includes a home oxygen concentrator, a portable oxygen concentrator or oxygen tanks (depending on your needs), and your regular supplies like tubing and cannulas. This is something I always encourage people to ask about, because not every company handles supplies the same way. Some companies charge extra for soft goods and supplies, but at Peak Oxygen, we don’t.
How we help at Peak Oxygen
A big part of what we do at Peak Oxygen is help people and families understand the process and get set up properly. If you’re new to oxygen, it can feel like a lot all at once with testing, paperwork, approvals, and equipment choices. We help walk you through it, get everything organized, and make sure you have the right equipment for your situation. If you’re not sure whether you qualify, that’s okay too—we can help point you in the right direction and explain what the next step usually looks like.
