Questions to ask your home oxygen provider

Questions to Ask Your Home Oxygen Provider in Alberta
Choosing a home oxygen provider is not a decision to rush. The company you choose will be in your home, managing your equipment, handling your funding, and answering the phone when something goes wrong at night. That is a meaningful relationship, and you deserve to feel confident going into it.
Whether you are setting up oxygen for the first time or thinking about switching providers, these six questions will help you find a team that genuinely has your best interests at heart.

Will I always speak to someone local when I call?
This one matters more than most people realize, until it doesn’t work.
Some oxygen providers operate out of national call centres, meaning the person who answers your call may be in a different province, unfamiliar with your situation, and unable to make decisions on the spot. When you are worried about your equipment at 11 p.m. or need an urgent supply drop, that is not the experience you want.
Ask your provider directly: who answers the phone after hours? Is it a local staff member who knows my file, or a general call centre? A provider with genuine 24/7 local support means someone who knows you by name picks up. Someone who can actually help.

What equipment will I receive, and will I get a portable concentrator?
Not all providers offer the same equipment, and some put new patients on waitlists for portable oxygen concentrators. This can leave you housebound for weeks or longer while you wait.
A portable concentrator is not a luxury. It is what allows you to attend appointments, visit family, run errands, and stay connected to your life outside the home. Ask whether a portable unit is included as part of your standard setup, how soon it will be delivered, and whether the equipment offered is current, well-maintained, and suited to your activity level.
The right provider fits you with the equipment that matches your lifestyle. Not just whatever is easiest to hand over.

Are soft goods and deliveries included, or will I be billed separately?
Soft goods (nasal cannulas, oxygen tubing, humidifier bottles) need to be replaced regularly, and the costs can add up quickly if your provider charges for them separately. The same goes for delivery fees whenever supplies are dropped off at your home.
Ask upfront: are cannulas, tubing, and other consumables included at no extra charge? Is home delivery covered? A provider that bundles these into your care at no additional cost is one that is thinking about your long-term comfort, not just the initial setup.

Can you help get me home from the hospital quickly?
A hospital discharge can feel rushed and overwhelming, and the last thing you or your family needs is to be waiting on an oxygen provider to get organized. Delays in equipment setup can mean delays in getting home. Every day counts.
Ask your provider how quickly they can respond to a hospital discharge referral. Can they have equipment set up in your home before you arrive? Do they coordinate directly with your care team? A provider with a streamlined hospital-to-home process will get you settled and breathing comfortably without unnecessary delays.

Will you handle my AADL paperwork?
Alberta Aids to Daily Living (AADL) is the provincial funding program that covers home oxygen for eligible Albertans, but the application involves clinical documentation, coordination with your physician, and submission to Alberta Health. It can feel like a lot to manage when you are also adjusting to a new diagnosis and a new routine.
Ask whether your provider handles the AADL process on your behalf, from start to finish. A good provider will take this entirely off your plate: submitting paperwork, following up on approvals, making sure there are no gaps in your coverage, and arranging any follow ups as necessary.

Is there a limit on how many oxygen tanks I can receive?
For many people on home oxygen, life does not slow down, and it shouldn’t have to. If you spend a lot of time away from home, whether that is hiking, travelling, visiting grandchildren, or simply running a full schedule, your oxygen supply needs to keep up with you.
Some providers place limits on the number of portable oxygen tanks available to a patient, which can force active individuals to cut outings short or plan their lives around refill schedules. That is not good enough.
Ask your provider directly: is there a cap on how many tanks I can access? What happens if I need more than the standard allotment? A provider who is genuinely committed to your quality of life will make sure your oxygen supply matches your lifestyle. Not the other way around. At Peak Oxygen, we work with our patients to ensure they have everything they need to stay active and keep living on their own terms, without arbitrary limits getting in the way.

The Right Provider Makes All the Difference
Home oxygen therapy is not a one-time transaction. It is ongoing care, and the provider you choose becomes a long-term part of your health team. You should feel confident that they are accessible, equipped, transparent about costs, and genuinely committed to making your life easier. Not more complicated.
At Peak Oxygen, we are proud to answer yes to every one of these questions. We are locally owned and operated, available 24 hours a day, and have been serving Calgary and surrounding Alberta communities for over a decade.
